about

This Sephardic lullaby is in Ladino (or Judeo-Spanish). Now endangered, the language was derived from Old Spanish and heavily influenced by Hebrew and Aramaic (as well as Arabic, Turkish, and other languages). Ladino was at one time spoken throughout the Balkans, Turkey, the Middle East, and North Africa, having originally been brought to those regions by Sephardic Jewish exiles, expelled from Spain by the Catholic monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella in 1492 (during a centuries-long period of anti-Semitic persecution and expulsions throughout Europe).

Sleep, sleep, beloved son / sleep, and don’t fret. / Close your tiny eyes. / Sleep; sleep restfully. / Close your beautiful eyes. / Sleep; sleep restfully. / Out of the crib / to enter school, / and there, my beloved son, / you’ll begin to read. / Out of school / to go to Las Manchas, / and you, my beloved son, / to work you’ll go.
