about

Our arrangement is based on the singer Amira Medunjanin’s exquisite rendition of this sevdah piece. Musicologist Kim Burton explains the Bosnian concept of sevdah: “Like the Spanish duende, it carries multiple meanings—love, hopeless love, endless love, a desire that chills and fevers the lover like malaria, and like malaria can never be shaken off—but in the end, it’s a way of life, and a narrative that tells the story of itself.”

lyrics

This morning, my rose blossomed. / I looked at it and began to cry. / Rose, I gave you my youth. / I watered you with my tears. / How many times have I kissed you / while you were still a young rosebud?
/ I drank the dew from your branches, / in place of the lips of my beloved. / My beloved left long ago; / I’ve already awaited him for a year. / I look at the rose and I think of you, my love: / of your lips, of your tender glance.
